BABY MASSAGE

Shantala baby massage is a traditional Indian massage technique that involves massaging and bonding with an infant through gentle strokes and movements. The technique was introduced to the world by French obstetrician and author Frédérick Leboyer, who witnessed the practice in India and documented it in his book "Loving Hands: The Traditional Art of Baby Massage."

The term "Shantala" refers to a woman from southern India who practiced this type of massage on her own child. The massage is characterized by its rhythmic and soothing strokes, which are intended to promote relaxation, improve circulation, aid in digestion, and strengthen the bond between the caregiver and the baby.

WHEN NOT TO GIVE A MASSAGE?

Fever or Illness: If your baby has a fever or is not feeling well, it's best to postpone the massage until they have recovered.

Skin Conditions: Avoid massaging over areas with skin conditions like rashes, cuts, bruises, or infections. It's better to let the skin heal before resuming massages.

After Vaccinations: Give your baby's body time to recover after vaccinations, as their muscles might be sore or sensitive.

Full Stomach: Avoid massaging right after feeding to prevent discomfort due to pressure on a full stomach. Wait at least 45 minutes to an hour after a feeding.

Crying or Discomfort: If your baby is crying excessively or seems uncomfortable, it's best not to massage as it might worsen their distress.

Sleepy or Hungry: Babies who are very sleepy or hungry might not be in the right mood for a massage.  Never start to massage a sleeping child, however if your baby has fallen asleep during massage you can continue the massage routine very gently! Ensure they are alert and content before beginning.

Unresponsive Mood: If your baby seems unresponsive or uninterested, forcing a massage might not be enjoyable for either of you.

Unwell Caregiver: If you, the caregiver, are unwell or not feeling your best, it's a good idea to wait until you're fully capable of safely and comfortably performing the massage.
